Deep Cove Village |
Only a 15 minute walk away from Lockehaven is the village of Deep Cove, whose "Main Street" is Gallant Avenue. Deep Cove is a recreational boating centre popular with both Vancouver area residents and with tourists. The quaint main street features several restaurants, gift shops, a live theatre and an art gallery. The excellent local pub and a local restaurant offer live music. |
Outdoor Activities |
Vancouver's North Shore is noted for its outdoor activities. Here are some of the more popular ones that are either within walking distance of Lockehaven or just a few minutes by car. |
Kayaking |
Only a ten minute walk from Lockehaven is the Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak Centre, which offers lessons, tours of the local waters and over a 100 kayaks and canoes for rent. For lessons and tours from June through to the end of September, expecially on weekends, it is a good idea to make a reservation up to a couple of weeks in advance. Also, two-place kayaks should be reserved a few days in advance. |
| Small Power Boat Rentals | Deep Cove North Shore Marina, directly across the Cove from Lockehaven, rents out small open power boats on an hourly or daily basis for exploring the waters around Deep Cove and Indian Arm. 18 foot Bayliner Bowriders with 135 hp inboard/outboard engines and 19 foot Bowriders with 75 hp outboards are offered. Either of these types would be suitable for taking 4 people in comfort up to the north end of Indian Arm. |
Hiking |
From Lockehaven, take a leisurely walk in the forest park next to the B&B or take a relatively easy mountain hike along the east end of the Baden-Powell Trail to Deep Cove Lookout (Quarry Rock), for a spectacular view. The trail starts at the north end of Panorama Park in Deep Cove Village. Lots of information on hiking opportunities on Vancouver's North Shore ranging from easy to challenging are described on the Hello BC Website Hiking Page For those of you who are into more serious hiking, climbing or exploring the mountain wilderness near Vancouver, contact Glen Sollars at Beyond the Tour, a mountaineering expert, who can guide you to fantastic viewpoints or help you test your limits by climbing some of the more challenging local peaks. In winter, Glen offers custom snow shoe excursions on Mount Seymour - a great alternative to skiing for experiencing the outdoors in the snow. |
Golf |
There are several golf courses and driving ranges within a 5-20 minute drive in North and West Vancouver and many more throughout the Vancouver area.
For additional golf courses in BC's Lower Mainland (Metropolitan Vancouver Area) and elsewhere in BC, check out this Golf Website |
Skiing |
Three good ski hills are less than 30 minutes away and offer night as well as day skiing. Each of these offers great trails for hiking in summer, especially Cypress:
Whistler, the ski site for the 2010 Olympics, is a 1 hour and 40 minute scenic drive away - an easy day trip. |
